There was a strong sewer gas smell that was unpleasant. Fortunately, we could throw open our window to help rid the room of the stench. That aside, the staff was very friendly and the room worked out great for us.

They helped us book museum tickets and look up train times. We were apprehensive because previous reviews indicated the hotel smells of sewer gas -- and indeed the lobby does smell a bit whiffy -- but the room smelled just fine and the scent downstairs didn't interfere with our enjoyment of the hotel. I know Florence is full of dodgy drains, but an improvement in the smell upon entering would move this hotel from 'good' to 'excellent' overall. The room itself was very pleasant, with plenty of space.
